The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering was established in 2010 with the laying of the foundations of National Institute of Technology Sikkim. The Department aims to provide its students the essential technical knowledge and skills of contemporary and futuristic technologies in the field of Electronics and Communication Engineering to match the global requirements. The Department offers B. Tech (4 years) in Electronics and Communication Engineering, M. Tech (2 years) in Electronics and Communication Engineering that enroots four broad domains viz. VLSI Technology, Communication Engineering, Signal Processing and Microwave Engineering. The Dept. also offers Ph. D in Engineering. Proper weightage in theory and practical learnings are given in the curriculum of all the offered programmes.

The research focus of the Department is in the areas of VLSI Design, Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC) Design & Modeling, Optimization of High-Performance Semiconductor Devices, Microwave Engineering & Antenna Design, Wireless Communication, Satellite systems & navigation, Signal Processing and Solar Cell.

The Department has basic laboratory facilities to provide the hands-on experience with the contemporary technologies to enable the students to keep pace with the modern and futuristic technologies. The Department comprises a diverse group of young, enthusiastic and dynamic faculty members. Continuous evaluation of teaching and learning is carried in the Department by collecting necessary feedback from the students. Special care and attention are taken for holistic development of the students to help them in academics, research and career aspects. Moreover, internship, industrial projects and interaction with leading academicians & industry persons are also arranged for the students as these help them to gain leadership skills, competitive skills, and entrepreneurial skills. Anuvrat, the departmental technical club organizes many technical events such as Alumni talk series namely Vimrishyotsava, National Science Day Lecture, Quiz Competition on regular basis.
